At the end of October, Bombay Sapphire revealed the third edition of the brand’s highly anticipated artist-designed Special Edition bottle, which pays homage to cultural icon and prolific artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Bombay Sapphire and the Basquiat Estate released a bottle which shines a light on Basquiat’s fearless creativity and their joint mission to make the art world more accessible to all who have a passion for self-expression, a part of the brand’s ongoing ‘Stir Creativity’ platform.

With that being said, we got the opportunity to speak with Bombay Sapphire’s Brand Director, Jaime Keller, to discuss the inspiration behind this collaboration, what it represents, the process, and where the Bombay Sapphire x Jean Michel Basquiat Special Edition Bottle is sold.

Check it out!

Q1: What inspired you to collaborate with the Basquiat Estate for Bombay Sapphire’s special edition bottle?

We were honored and excited to work with the Basquiat Estate to shine a light on Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dynamic creativity and offer an entirely new way to experience art. The release of this special edition bottle marks a significant milestone in a yearlong partnership with the Basquiat Estate. The partnership first began with the opening of the King Pleasure Exhibit in New York, which Bombay Sapphire sponsored. On the heels of the exhibit, Bombay Sapphire also created three bespoke cocktail kits in partnership with bartenders from around the country, the ‘Bombay for Real’ kits, inspired by three never-before-seen paintings from the King Pleasure exhibit.

The special edition bottle represents Bombay Sapphire’s longstanding history of supporting creative visionaries with our combined mission with the Basquiat Estate to make the art world more accessible. By releasing our third artist-designed special edition bottle, we hope to inspire people with Jean-Michel’s art for generations to come.

Q2: Besides the art, is this collaboration any different from the 1st and 2nd edition bottles in terms of the process of choosing who to collaborate with? And if yes, how so?

Every year for our special edition bottle, we look to collaborate with artistic visionaries who inspire the next generation of creatives – we celebrate new artists and new communities each time a new bottle is released. This year’s evolution of the collection was particularly special because it was the first time the brand worked alongside the artists’ family rather than working with the artist directly, and there is no one more iconic than Jean-Michel Basquiat. Knowing this, we worked very closely with Jean Michel’s sisters, Lisane and Jeanie of the Basquiat Estate, to select a painting that matched the same creative spirit of the artist and the brand – one that would celebrate his legacy and inspire new generations.

In terms of the special edition bottle itself, this year marked the first time in brand history that Bombay Sapphire has printed the painting directly on the bottle. The unique printing mechanism allows Basquiat’s original rich colors and distinct strokes to stand out more than it would if it were a skin. This special edition bottle is also the first to showcase a never-before licensed piece from an artist’s earliest days. Basquiat’s Untitled (L.A Painting) has only been displayed to the public once before, in his second art show ever.

Q3: Can you tell us what made you choose to use Basquiat’s Untitled LA Painting as the inspiration for the bottle?

We were thrilled to take one of Basquiat’s masterpieces, Untitled (L.A. Painting), outside a traditional gallery setting and reimagine it as a statement piece in anyone’s home. As one of his earliest works, the piece is influenced by the surrounding remote environment of Venice Beach, where Basquiat found security and solitude away from the hustle and bustle of New York. It is a work of art that urges people to take a step back and observe the beauty that exists all around them, just as Jean-Michel did during his time in L.A.

As the painting is made up of soft blue hues and underlayers of golden yellow, Untitled (L.A. Painting) was the ideal piece to complement our Bombay Sapphire brand. We used an innovative transfer technology to seamlessly apply the artwork to all sides of the bottle, allowing the painting to be presented in all its glory, unconstrained by the limitations of a label. We love that it allows something on your bar cart to be a true statement, collectible piece.

Q4: Where is the special edition bottle sold?

The Bombay Sapphire x Jean Michel Basquiat Special Edition Bottle is available for purchase directly on Bombay’s website HERE and on ReserveBar.com for $23.99
