Los Angeles – Lights, camera, sunset! Film viewing takes to the sky directly above Hollywood this summer, where a night at the movies rises to a higher level along the 1600 block of the star-stamped sidewalks of bustling Vine Street. The United Kingdom’s leading outdoor cinema company, the Rooftop Film Club is turning the iconic roof of The Montalbãn into a unique theatre where they will launch their first season of films in Los Angeles beginning Wednesday, August 26th, 2015.
Established in the summer of 2011, the Rooftop Film Club came to life under the direction of Founder Gerry Cottle Jr. who envisioned a pop-up cinema experience, which combines magical movie-going moments with a night out on the town. With the launch of Rooftop Film Club he achieved just that and began screening lovable classic films, cult favorites and new releases atop the Queen Hoxton bar in East London. With a tremendously positive response, the inevitable expansion followed and a year later in 2012 long-time childhood friend Nick Frow partnered up with Cottle Jr. to take this outstanding experience to multiple rooftops in London, including the Bussey Building in Peckham, Roof East in Stratford and the stunning Roof Gardens in Kensington from none other than Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Limited Edition.
“It is a dream to bring our exciting cinema experience to Hollywood. With its amazing history and iconic location alongside the world-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, we think The Montalbãn is the perfect venue for our West Coast home,” says Cottle Jr.
Not limited to just rooftops, the dynamic duo ignited additional movie-going experiences with the Drive In Film Club, as well as the Underground Film Club along the cobblestoned streets of Waterloo, before taking Rooftop Film Club stateside to New York. Their first American outpost saw a sold-out launch season at the YOTEL in midtown this past June where New Yorkers could relive Dirty Dancing and hum along to Moon River from Breakfast At Tiffany’s aloft in the Manhattan skyline.
As for the experience itself, moviegoers will be able to indulge in craft beers, select wines and movie-themed food that will be procured from local L.A. vendors for guests to sip and snack on while lounging in lush Brighton Beach Deck Chairs equipped with high quality wireless headphones. The Montalbãn, built in 1927 and steeped in Hollywood history, plays perfect host as it was once a working space for the performing arts and entertainment industry and has since housed a movie cinema, radio and television programs, concerts, theatrical performances and film productions.
As a tribute to Los Angeles, the Rooftop Film Club will kick-off this first season with movies that delve into the pop culture and eclectic ethos of L.A., including the Coen Brothers cult classic The Big Lebowski, the 1980’s dystopian thriller Bladerunner and the quirky and comical story of Beverly Hills teenagers in Clueless (also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year as well). Timeless tales such as Casablanca, the classic sing-along musical Grease, and brat-pack era favorites Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club are just a few of the films to follow.
With an exciting rooftop location set in the heart of historic Hollywood and a movie lineup of lovable favorite films paired with delicious food and drinks, the Rooftop Film Club is revolutionizing the art of movie viewing in the town of filmmaking itself. Make sure to book your premier screening soon and celebrate the arrival of this one of a kind rooftop movie-going experience!
